But many people think that mobile phones are actually more irritating than they are useful. Have you used a bus or a train lately?
I have to take the train to and from London every day and I find myself forced to listen to mobile conversations that I would far rather not hear. On my homeward journey I regularly listen to people calling their partners just to tell them: ‘I’m on the train’. And I see and hear the same people making the same calls with the same pointless message every day. What did they use before mobile phones, carrier pigeons?
I’m also forced to listen to teenagers engaged in long drawn out conversations that don’t appear to make any sense. Often, they seem to be discussing their boring, empty lives or scathingly criticizing an alleged friend’s dress sense or discussing boyfriends in unflattering terms. In one conversation that was heard recently a young lady described a recent sexual experience with a young man in far too much detail. As she proceeded to describe exactly what had taken place everyone in the train compartment was cringing with embarassment.
Being forced to listen to what should be private conversations is just one aspect of modern mobile phone use that is highly anti-social. Another is those incredibly irritating and often far too loud ringtones that are supposed to sound like a popular tune but don’t.
Everyone needs to be reminded of how lucky they are to own a mobile phone. Owning a mobile phone is not a god given right, it’s a privelige that should not be provided to people who use it to describe their sex lives, loudly.
